Since 19 August 2025 a new obligation applies throughout the European Union: all heavy goods vehicles that international driving must be equipped with the Smart Tachograph version 2 (G2V2). This has reached the last deadline in the phased introduction of this system.

The new tachograph will replace the previous version which has been mandatory in all newly registered heavy vehicles since August 2023. The Smart Tachograph 2 offers a range of enhanced features including:
- Automatic recording of border crossings
- Commitment of loading and unloading operations
- Better capabilities for software updates
- A higher resistance to manipulation An important addition is the possibility to transmit data on distance to enforcement authorities. This allows more targeted checks, for example compliance with the Driving and rest periods. The tachograph also plays a role in the enforcement of rules on cabotage and by drivers. The obligation will be further extended in the coming years. Thus, from 24 December 2025 all newly registered trucks are equipped with the OSNMA Smart Tachograph 2 standard. This functionality uses satellite security and prevents vehicle position manipulation. Also Vans between 2.5 and 3.5 tonnes which are internationally driven from 1 July 2026 under tachograph and driving time rules. The not correct use of a Smart Tachograph version 2 can be expensive. Fines can go up to €4,400.
