Along the German highways is a Severe shortage of parking spaces for trucks. According to a recent census by the Auto Club Europa (ACE) motorists, about 25,000 extra truck parking spaces are needed. This structural deficit leads to dangerous situations, such as trucks that park on gas station inserts. In addition, the constant search for a place for inefficiency in the logistics sector, which is already struggling with a shortage of drivers.

To address this problem, Germany has started a pilot of a new digital system: the Stellaplatzinformationsdienst (SID). This system provides real time information about the occupation of truck parking spaces at highway rest places. The data is obtained directly from the German toll system of Toll Collect and publicly shared through the Mobilithek of the German government.
SID was developed by the German Ministry of Transport (BMV), the Bundesamt für Logistik und Mobilität (BALM) and toll operator Toll Collect. In the current test phase, data are already provided from more than half of the approximately 1.900 public resting places. The remaining locations must be connected by the end of 2025. From 2026 also wants to integrate parking data from providers, so that drivers can also find alternative parking options near highways.
