EU announces new Euro-7 emission standards

European legislators have agreed on the upcoming Euro 7 standards. The Euro 7 standards will set the current Euro 6 standards replaced and stricter limits for emissions of particulate matter and nitrogen oxides for cars, vans and trucks.

The Euro 7 standards will replace the current Euro 6 standards and set stricter limits on emissions of particulate matter and nitrogen oxides for cars, vans and trucks.

From 2028 (for trucks) manufacturers will have to meet new standards in the production of new vehicles. The introduction of the Euro-7 standard is a major step in the continuous sustainability of the transport sector: It will force the manufacturers to invest in the manufacturing process of the trucks.

  • The limit for nitrogen oxides (NOX) is reduced to 200 mg/kWh, while the current limit is currently 400 mg/kWh
  • Batteries of electric vehicles must retain at least 80% of their original capacity after five years, and at least 72% after eight years
  • Limit of tyre wear and pollution caused by brake particles. This remains to be decided. Together with the CO2 standards, the new emission standards are the necessary investment requirements of manufacturers.

This could have consequences on the purchase price. For Dutch transport operators, the agreement on Euro 7 standards represents a significant change in the regulatory framework for their Vehicle fleet. These changes will encourage transport operators to adapt to the new standards and possibly invest in new vehicles. Since the AANZeT of the legislation in mid-2020, this gives transport operators time to plan and implement the necessary adjustments.
