Czech Republic introduces CO2 surcharge on toll

From 1 March 2024 the electronic toll system in the Czech Republic will introduce a new charging component for heavy vehicles, the level of CO2 emissions. The new rates will be based on the following four components:

The new rates will be based on the following four components:

  • Current toll rate
  • Noise charge
  • Air pollution charge (according to EURO standard)
  • Charge for CO2 emissions (New) According to EU legislation, there are five emission classes where the 1st emission class will pay the highest rate. The 5th emission class is reserved for vehicles without emissions. Most vehicles registered with before 1 July 2019 are automatically classified into the 1st emission class and are not eligible for a higher emission class where the rates are lower. transport operators holding vehicles registered with after 1 July 2019 are advised to check the manufacturer's documentation and use the emission class finder to determine whether their vehicle can be reallocated to a higher emission class with a lower toll rate. Users need not check the emission class of vehicles registered after 1 July 2019. They become not punished for the use of a vehicle eligible for a higher CO2 emission class while remaining in the 1st emission class (higher rate). They can have their vehicle inspected and a apply for a higher CO2 emission class at any time in the future. There is no deadline for submitting an electronic application. Not all vehicles registered after 1 July 2019 meet the requirements of higher CO2 emission classes (2nd to 5th). This depends on whether they meet the specified parameters in the guidelines that can be checked with the emission class finder. Specific rates linked to the different emission classes have not yet been made public. It is advisable to fill in all the emission class finder with the details of your vehicles. This allows you to determine in advance which emission class your vehicle is subject to and prevent unpleasant surprises from 1 March 2024.
