Due to the Dutch excise increase as of 1 January 2026, refuelling in Belgium has become even more financially attractive for many transport companies.

As of 1 January 2026, the Dutch government has increased excise duties on fuel. In particular, the excise duty on diesel has risen, which is immediately visible in a higher pump price per litre. With this excise increase, the Netherlands is once again widening the price difference with neighbouring countries.
Since 2022, a temporary excise reduction on fuels had applied in the Netherlands, introduced to soften the effects of high energy prices. In 2026, this reduction was partially phased out, causing the effective excise duty to rise again.
In concrete terms, this means an excise increase of:
The already existing price difference with neighbouring countries is therefore increasing further, especially compared with Belgium. Belgium offers transport companies the possibility to reclaim part of the excise rate. The current reimbursement as of January 2026 amounts to 19.13 cents per litre of diesel. Many carriers who regularly refuel in Belgium already make structural use of this.
For transport companies that operate internationally or are located near the Belgian border, it is therefore often more financially attractive to shift refuelling to Belgium.
Would you like to have the money you are entitled to paid directly into your account? Then with Delta, these reimbursements can usually be pre-financed. Even with pre-financing of the Belgian excise reimbursement, you are almost always better off than when refuelling in the Netherlands, both at public filling stations and on your own premises.
