From the third quarter of 2025, the Italian excise duty refund on diesel was increased by more than one and a half cents per litre.

From third quarter of 2025 the Italian excise duty refund on diesel is increased by more than one and a half cents per litre. The current refund amount is € 0,22918 per litre. In a sector where margins are thin, such an increase can make a noticeable difference for transport operators.

However, many small and medium-sized enterprises still miss this opportunity. According to sector organisations, this is often due to administrative barriers: companies are not always aware of their entitlement or are put off by the application procedure. That is a shame, because with a consumption of 100,000 litres per year in Italy, the refund quickly rises to a substantial amount of €22,000.
The conditions are also simple. no separate permit required is eligible for an application and all vehicles above 7.5 tonnes weight are eligible.
