Truck charge is coming to the Netherlands

As of 1 July 2026, the Netherlands will introduce the truck charge. This new scheme replaces the current Eurovignette and has direct financial and operational consequences for both Dutch and foreign transport operators driving in the Netherlands.

The truck charge is a distance-based levy for trucks with a maximum permitted mass of more than 3,500 kg. Instead of a fixed amount per period, as under the Eurovignette, you will soon pay per kilometre driven on:

  • almost all Dutch motorways
  • a number of provincial and municipal roads

What determines the amount of the charge?

The amount of the truck charge is determined by:

  • the weight of the vehicle
  • the CO₂ emissions and emission class

To calculate how much charge your vehicles will have to pay, you can use the official calculation tool.

Eurovignette will end for the Netherlands

With the introduction of the truck charge, the Eurovignette will cease to apply in the Netherlands in full. For other countries where the Eurovignette still applies, it will of course remain in force.

On-board unit and EETS requirement

To register the kilometres driven, trucks must be equipped with an on-board unit (OBU). In addition, the carrier must conclude a contract with a recognized service provider (EETS provider) that takes care of the registration and payment of the charge. Without a valid contract or a functioning OBU, fines may be imposed.

Adjustment of motor vehicle tax (MRB)

At the same time, the government is adjusting the MRB:

  • for trucks up to 12,000 kg, the MRB will be abolished
  • for heavier trucks, the MRB will be significantly reduced

Preparation is essential

Although the introduction will only take place halfway through 2026, preparation is advisable. Map out which vehicles in your fleet fall under the scheme and follow developments regarding recognized EETS providers.
