Pressure expected at petrol stations in the Netherlands

Due to the rise in excise duty on 1 July, service stations expect large crowds in the last days of June. What does this mean for drivers and transport operators?

Pressure expected at petrol stations in the Netherlands

Because the excise duty on diesel and petrol increases sharply on 1 July, Dutch petrol stations expect a huge crowd in the last days of June. For many drivers this is the last chance to refuel cheaper.

Expect gas station owners in the Netherlands large crowds during the last days of June. This becomes the last chance to refuel at current rates for drivers before the excise duty on petrol and diesel on 1 July is again increased.

In an earlier article on our website it became clear that as from 1 July 2023 the excise duty rate in the Netherlands will rise significantly. Our calculation showed that this will increase the diesel price with about 10 cents per litre.

Tank stations ensure that the fuel pumps are well filled so that they can operate bargain hunters, according to Belogenvereniging Tankstations (BETA), which represents independent station owners. President Ewout Klok expects the increase in excise duty on 1 July will lead to significantly higher prices. Moreover, he does not think that entrepreneurs will gradually increase their prices before that date.

The association for independent service station owners fears that this increase will lead to a large loss to customers, especially in the border region. As price differences between the Netherlands and countries such as Belgium and Germany increase again, refueling abroad becomes a lot more attractive.

These increasing differences may give many drivers and transport operators the opportunity to refuel their rethinking tank behaviour and more often in neighbouring countries such as Belgium or Germany.
