In 2026, the Netherlands introduced a truck tax based on the Truck Tax Act. This regulation lays down inter alia the obligation of on-board equipment and the tariff structure.

In 2026, the Netherlands will introduce a truck tax, with the "Truck Tax Act" as its legal basis. The details of these regulations have been further developed in a Decision and a Ministerial Arrangement. Parliament adopted this law on 12 July 2022.

From the moment that truck tax starts in the Netherlands in 2026, every truck who wants to drive in the Netherlands must be equipped with working On-board equipment (also known as OBU). With this equipment the mileage travelled on the charging network is recorded.
The truck charge applies to all domestic and foreign trucks weighing 3.5 tonnes or more. The average rate per kilometre is approximately €0.167 (price level 2023). The rate is lower for cleaner and lighter trucks. More information about the rates can be found here.
With the introduction of the truck tax, the vehicle tax will become significant decreased in the Netherlands. Domestic and foreign trucks will then pay equally for the use of the road.
The RDW awarded VITRONIC the contract for the supply of surveillance equipment for the truck charge. VITRONIC will supply and install equipment enabling RDW to verify that truck drivers comply with the obligations of the charge. In addition, VITRONIC will provide all associated service services for at least 10 years.
In our neighbouring countries Belgium and Germany already applies a truck tax per kilometre driven. Dutch trucks also pay for using the highways.
